Tips and Ideas for your Crafts

Craft Tips & Ideas #1:

One of the easiest ways to save money is by collecting items around your home to use for your arts and crafts projects. You will need a large container and a place to store your collection.

Some useful items to collect include the following:
  • paper towel rolls
  • toilet paper rolls
  • clean tuna cans
  • soup cans
  • 1 gallon milk jugs
  • 1/2 gallon milk cartons
  • egg cartons
  • cereal boxes
  • small cardboard boxes
  • newspapers
  • cloth scraps
  • cotton swabs
  • cotton balls
  • juice cans
  • soap (for carving)
  • dried macaroni
  • wrapping paper
  • straws
  • paper plates
  • button down shirts (smocks)
  • wallpaper
  • old blue jeans
  • clean coke cans
  • jelly jars
  • baby food jars
  • cream cheese containers
  • old t-shirts
  • old socks
  • bottle caps
  • paper bags
  • small sticks
  • clothespins
  • coffee can
  • old catalogs
  • coat hangers
  • corks
  • coloring books
  • sponges
  • potatoes (for stamping)
  • pipe cleaners
  • yarn

Styrofoam meat trays are great as well, but they must be washed thoroughly to remove any leftover meat residue and possible bacteria.

Craft Tips & Ideas #2:

Crafts help kids to grow, developing their imagination along the way. It is important that you design successful arts and crafts projects which keep your children interested from start to finish.

How to Measure the Success of a Project:
  1. Are your kids having fun? (If your kids are not having fun or becoming bored very easily, then you may need to look for another project that might keep them interested.)
  2. Are your kids learning something new? (What better way to develop a growing mind than to make something they have never created before).
  3. Are your kids able to complete the art project with minimal assistance? (This does not apply to young toddlers. Your arts and crafts projects should be designed with the child's age in mind.)
  4. Are your projects bringing your family closer together? (One of the reasons why we like to create arts and crafts projects with our kids is to bring us closer together. If your child seems to be inattentive or frustrated, it is better to take a mini break and come back to the project at a later time. Inattentiveness and frustration will not bring us closer together.)
  5. Are your kids successfully using their imaginations to bring uniqueness to the project? (Allowing your child to develop their own talents will keep them happier and make your job much easier. Example- Allowing your children to use their own colors and designs in the project.)

Craft Tips & Ideas #3:

Steps in Helping Your Kids to Learn:
  1. Select an age appropriate craft.
  2. Make a sample so your child will have a visual image in their mind.
  3. Collect all materials in advance and set them out beforehand.
  4. Plan on setting up your arts and crafts projects in a place where you will have plenty of working room.
  5. Teach your kids craft projects in steps. For example:
  • Trace
  • Cut
  • Glue
  • Allow to Dry
  • Clean Up Time

Arts and Crafts Ideas and Projects

Arts and Crafts Ideas #1:

Pine Cone Bird Feeders:

This project is incredibly easy, and your kids will love it! For this project, you will need the following:

pine cones
spoons
paper plates
peanut butter
bird seed or cornmeal
piece of wire, yarn, or string

Take your kids to a location to collect pine cones. If pine cones are not available in your area, you should be able to find them fairly cheap at your local arts and crafts store. Set up a container of peanut butter and a plate of bird seeds (or cornmeal) for each child. Take spoonfuls of peanut butter and fill the pine cone from top to bottom. Next, place the pine cone in the bird seed mixture and roll it around so the entire pine cone is covered. I have tried both cornmeal and birdseed, and the cornmeal seems to take a little more work and is a little messier. Once the pine cone is covered with "bird food", take a piece of wire and wrap it around the top of the pine cone, leaving room to attach the rest of the wire to a tree branch. Take your kids outside and have them each attach their own pine cones to a separate tree branch. The birds will love you!
